The result is a live performance that essentially sounds just as good as when Money was decades younger. I’m sure Money wasn’t thinking when he first recorded his hits that having such help melodically by the time he was performing live in his mid-60s would be beneficial, but it’s exactly how it’s turned out. Money’s biggest hits, “Walk on Water,” “I Wanna Go Back” and “Take Me Home Tonight” all had prominent backing vocals throughout. The Eddie Money band, made up of guitarist Tommy Girvin, drummer Glenn Symmons, bassist Lee Beverly and keyboard player Chris Grove is spot-on. Money gave a wry smile, proclaimed “Cleveland rocks,” and the band was off and running with “We Should Be Sleeping.” He doesn’t quite hit all the high notes he used to or move quite as freely, but his New York charm is infectious. He said from the stage his mother is from the Buckeye state, and has even joked in recent interviews his guest list is “bigger than the Rolling Stones’ ” when he plays Ohio.Ĭleveland’s love for Money was palpable as he shuffled to the stage in his usual Rat Pack-inspired suit and the band launched into opener “Baby Hold On.” The near capacity crowd sang along with and hung on Money’s every word. The 65-year-old classic rocker has performed essentially the same set for more than a decade now, but judging by the reaction he received Friday at the House of Blues in Cleveland, he’s giving his fans exactly what they want. Eddie Money might not be as spry as he once was, but his popularity in concert surely hasn’t waned any with age.
